Pick a destination the way an operator would
Most destination research optimises for photographs. Operators optimise for three duller things, and they are the ones that decide whether a trip works.
- Season, not month. Late September in the Cyclades and late September in the Dolomites are different planets. Shoulder season usually buys you the same weather at two-thirds of the price and half the crowd — but only in destinations whose shoulder is genuinely shoulder.
- Internal distance. A country that looks compact on a map can eat a day between two stops. Croatia's islands are ferry-dependent; Turkey's highlights are three internal flights apart. Ask an operator for realistic transfer times before falling in love with a five-city plan.
- Depth of supply. A destination with 40 verified companies will produce better offers than one with 4, simply because you get genuine competition. It is the least romantic selection criterion and one of the most useful.
