The difference between a good trip to Spain and a frustrating one is rarely the itinerary on paper. It is whether the company running it has staff, contracts and licences inside the country, or is coordinating by email from somewhere else and marking up a local supplier it has never met.

Andalusia’s monument entry — the Alhambra above all — runs on timed slots released months ahead and capped per operator. Access is a function of standing quota, not effort.

When you shortlist companies in Spain, two questions separate the two kinds quickly: which services are operated in-house rather than subcontracted, and what happens if a transfer fails at 6am. The specificity of the answers tells you almost everything.

April to June and September to October across most of the country; the Atlantic north runs on a different calendar, with July and August the reliable months there.

Budget expectation matters as much as timing. Mid to upper-mid programmes in Spain typically run €140–380 per person per day for mid to upper-mid programmes, excluding international flights. Naming a range in your request is not a weakness — it is what lets a company quote something concrete rather than opening with clarifying questions.

Underestimating internal distances. Andalusia to the Basque country is a full travel day, and itineraries that treat Spain as one compact region lose two afternoons to transfers.

On guiding specifically: Official guides are required at the Alhambra, the Mezquita and most Andalusian monuments, and quotas are enforced at the gate. This is one of the reasons the licence check exists — an unlicensed guide is a legal exposure for the traveller as well as the operator.

Spain licenses travel agencies at the level of the autonomous community, each with its own register and its own insurance requirement. A Catalonia registration does not by itself qualify an operator in Andalusia.

Verification is re-run annually and immediately on any substantiated complaint, and expired insurance suspends a listing automatically. What it does not do is guarantee taste, guarantee the lowest price, or replace the financial protection that package travel rules and your payment method provide. Saying so plainly is the point: a badge that quietly implies more than it checks transfers risk to the traveller while collecting the credit.
